The moon by zodiac sign, explained

The moon passes through all twelve zodiac signs roughly every 27 days, spending about two and a half days in each sign. The moon’s sign is simply which zodiac segment the moon sits in tonight, measured along the same circle as the sun signs. This guide explains what that means, how it differs from your sun sign, and how to find the moon’s current sign.

This is astrology, which is tradition and entertainment, not fact. It is here for interest and reflection.

What is the moon’s sign?

The zodiac is a ring of twelve 30-degree segments around the sky. The sun takes a year to travel the ring, which is why your sun sign changes about once a month. The moon travels the same ring in under a month, so it changes sign every couple of days. The moon’s sign is whichever segment it is passing through right now.

How is this different from my sun sign?

Your sun sign is set by your birthday, because it depends on the slow-moving sun. The moon’s sign changes constantly, so it is about the moment rather than the person. When people talk about “the moon in Scorpio tonight,” they mean the fast-moving moon, not your birth chart.

What does each moon sign traditionally mean?

In folklore the moon’s sign colors the mood of the day. A short version:

Element Signs Traditional feel
Fire Aries, Leo, Sagittarius Active, bold, outward.
Earth Taurus, Virgo, Capricorn Steady, practical, grounded.
Air Gemini, Libra, Aquarius Social, curious, talkative.
Water Cancer, Scorpio, Pisces Tender, deep, inward.

The moon is said to be most at home in Cancer, the sign it rules.

How do I find the moon’s sign today?

The moon’s sign depends on the date and changes every two to three days, so a fixed chart will not do; it has to be computed for the day. Gibbous shows the moon’s current sign and degree, when it next changes sign, and what each lunar sign traditionally means, as an optional layer you can turn on or leave off.

Why do gardeners and others track it?

Beyond astrology, the moon’s sign shows up in older almanac traditions, from planting by “fruitful” and “barren” signs to timing chores. You do not have to believe any of it to enjoy following the moon’s slow walk through the zodiac each month.
